1. Who we are
PetMap operates a directory of pet-related businesses and places in Nigeria at petmap.ng. For the purposes of the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (the “Act”), we are the data controller for the personal data described here. Read this alongside our Terms & Conditions.
2. What we collect from you
Browsing and searching. Searching or filtering the directory is handled as part of the page request. We keep a record of what people search for, with no link to who searched: the words typed, how many results came back and which filters were on. It is kept for 180 days and used to decide what to add to PetMap. We do not build a profile of you and we do not track you onto other websites.
Reviews. Your name, rating and comment, all of which are published on the listing, and an email address if you choose to give one, which is not published and is used only to follow up on the review.
Messages. Anything you send us through the contact widget or a listing report, including the contact details you provide so we can reply.
Location. If you use “near me”, your browser asks your permission and passes us your coordinates for that search alone. We do not store them.
Page activity. We count which listings are viewed and which contact buttons are pressed, so a listed business can see how its listing performs. The identifier we use for this is a one-way code that changes every day and cannot be traced back to you, and what a business sees is totals rather than people. 3. Why we are permitted to use it
Section 25 of the Act requires a lawful basis. We rely on legitimate interests to run the directory and to count how listings perform, and on consent for marketing messages and for anything we might add in future that would track you beyond this site. We run nothing of that kind today. Reviews and messages you send us are processed because you chose to send them.
4. Cookies and local storage
We use no advertising cookies and no third-party analytics.
Needed to run the site. A session cookie if you sign in to an account area, your saved light or dark preference, a note of whether you dismissed the app install prompt, and an offline cache your browser keeps so pages load without fetching everything again. None of these identify you to us.
Third-party trackers, which we do not use. Advertising networks set their own identifiers and follow people between sites. That needs your agreement first, which is what the notice on your first visit asks for. We run none of them today, so declining changes nothing that currently happens. We record your answer so that if we ever add one, anyone who has already declined stays out of it. Change your answer whenever you like through “Cookie choices” in the footer.
5. Who else handles it
We use a small number of service providers to run the site: hosting, database and file storage, and email delivery. Each processes data only on our instructions and for no purpose of its own. Map views load imagery from a third-party mapping service, which sees your IP address as part of serving the map, under its own terms.
Some of these providers operate infrastructure outside Nigeria, so running the site involves transferring personal data abroad. We rely on contractual protections with each of them to keep that data subject to standards comparable to those the Act requires. We do not sell personal data and we do not share it with advertisers.
6. Your rights
Under the Act you may ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, ask us to restrict how we use it, object to processing we carry out on the basis of legitimate interests, and withdraw consent you have given. We do not make decisions about you by automated means.
Write to and we will respond within 30 days. We may ask you to confirm your identity first, which protects you as much as us. Exercising any of these rights is free.
PetMap is a general-audience directory of businesses. It is not aimed at children and we do not knowingly collect personal data from one. If you believe a child has given us personal data, write to the same address and we will delete it.
7. How long we keep it
Reviews stay published while the listing does. Messages you send us are kept for as long as needed to deal with the matter and any follow-up. Counts of page activity are kept for up to 24 months, then deleted or reduced to totals from which no individual event can be separated. The record of search terms is kept for 180 days. Where the law requires us to keep something longer, we keep it for that period and no longer.
8. Security
Data is encrypted in transit. Access to our administrative systems is restricted to accounts that need it and actions taken in them are logged. No system is immune from compromise, and if a breach occurs that is likely to result in a risk to your rights, we will notify the Nigeria Data Protection Commission and, where the Act requires it, you.
9. Changes and complaints
We update this policy when what we do changes, and the date at the top shows when it last changed. Where a change materially affects your rights we will say so on the site.
